Roaming, another blockade example against Cuba

Many did not imagine it. Others were surprised their mobile service was not operational in Cuba. Then, you could read either insolent mockeries or evil accusations against “censorship”.

The roaming —service that allows phone lines to be operative when you travel from the US to Cuba— will be unlocked. There are no doubts! The regime was forced to accept it!

The first agreement has just been signed by the Cuban Telecommunication Company (ETECSA) and US Sprint Communication Company LP (Sprint) at the International Fair FIHAV 2015. This agreement will certainly facilitate clients to use such service in order to make or receive calls, or send or receive SMS from Cuba through their cell phones.

However, payments for such services will continue to be made through third countries, using a currency different to the US dollar, stated to Granma newspaper Vivian Iglesias, ETECSA’s Head of International Services.

Both companies signed on September 22, 2015 an agreement for direct interconnection through the ALBA-1 Submarine Cable, which allows direct calls between Cuba and the US.

However, neither the agreement, nor the business models in the telecommunication field are working yet. It still remains the prohibition of US to carry out money transactions with American banks, and third country banks fear the sanctions they may be imposed for implementing these operations.

Therefore, the roaming is another example of the US blockade against Cuba. Obviously, this is less lethal than what occurs with medicines for children, and other embarrassing situations for the Cuban people.

No to mention Obama is keen to allow infocomm operators to “help Cuban people to have a democratic regime”.
