'Zootopia 2' dominated the global box office this weekend with a $556 million haul, over a weekend marked by the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States. In China alone, the film earned $272 million, making it one of the best foreign film openings in the country's history.
According to data from Box Office Mojo, the Disney film opened in 4,000 theaters in the United States, earning $156 million domestically.
This figure places the film as the second-highest opening weekend in history over the Thanksgiving holiday frame—spanning five days— surpassed only by 'Moana 2' last year ($225 million) and ahead of 'Frozen 2' ($125 million) in 2019.
The original 'Zootopia' film opened in March 2016 with $75 million and became a major success in the United States, earning $341 million domestically and $1.020 billion worldwide, as noted by Variety.
China has been fundamental to the global success of 'Zootopia 2'; its opening figure in the country has only been surpassed by 'Avengers: Endgame' with $330 million.
Disney opened a dedicated Zootopia section in its Shanghai theme park in 2023, which has become one of the most popular attractions, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
'Zootopia 2' was not the only big-budget blockbuster to satisfy audiences over the Thanksgiving period.
'Wicked: For Good', the second installment of the musical adaptation, reached $93 million in its second weekend of release—$63 million of that in the United States alone.
The third spot in U.S. box office earnings went to 'Now You See Me, Now You Don't', followed by 'Predator: Badlands' with $4.8 million, and 'The Running Man' with $3.7 million.
