World is on the brink of impending catastrophe, warns COP26 Chief

Britain's COP26 President Alok Sharma on Sunday warned today the world is dangerously close to running out of time to stop a climate change catastrophe.

According to the Alok Sharma, former Business Secretary and now COP26 leader -the climate summit in Glasgow in November- floods, fires and heatwaves are clear signs that it is critical to act as soon as possible.

'We can't afford to wait two years, five years, 10 years - this is the moment, he stressed.

Sharma's warning came on the eve of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change releasing a new report on the impact of global warming on oceans, Arctic ice sheets and land.

In this regard, Sharma said this document will be the harshest warning so far that human behavior is accelerating global warming alarmingly.

That is why COP26 has to be the time to correct this, Sharma added, alluding to forthcoming summit slated for Q1 November, and where representatives from nearly 200 nations are expected to attend.

The event is considered one of the last chances for governments to make greater commitments to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

The richest are also expected to increase their financial contributions to help the poorest and most vulnerable countries cope with the effects of climate change.
