A Weekend devoted to Dance
especiales
Two iconic companies, Ballet Nacional de Cuba (BNC, Cuba’s National Ballet) and Danza Contemporánea de Cuba (DCC, Cuba’s Contemporary Dance) were back on stage last weekend in a joint performance after several months of forced impasse due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The performance, staged at the Avellaneda Hall of the National Theater, made up the programme of the British Culture Week, which is taking place nowadays in some venues across the Cuban capital city.
Two choreographers from Great Britain were working with the Cuban companies: The BNC performed Prospera, by Cathy Marston, a re-enactment of William Shakespeare's The Tempest inspired by the life of Alicia Alonso (where first soloist Daniela Gómez shone); while DCC staged Danzas de Amor que se fue (Dances of Love that went away), a proposal of singular lyricism choreographed by Billy Cowie.
It was the reunion between the large audience of dance in Havana with two of the most venerated Cuban companies.
