Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner, World Number 2, successfully defended his ATP Finals title by defeating Spanish player Carlos Alcaraz (1) in the final held at the Inalpi Arena in Turin.
Sinner, 24, prevailed with scores of 7-6 (7/4) and 7-5 after 2 hours and 15 minutes against Alcaraz (22), who was seeking his first title in the tournament that brings together the top 8 players of the year and concludes the men's professional circuit season.
"It's incredible... an incredible season. Coming to Turin and winning in front of the Italian crowd was fantastic. I was looking forward to this tournament. It is very special for me," stated Sinner, who after the victory acknowledged his team and his girlfriend, Danish model Laila Hasanovic.
"Without a team, this would not have been possible. Celebrating this tournament after two intense months is incredible. You have to play your absolute best against Carlos: I served well in some key moments. He is one of the best returners on the tour. It was a very tough match. It means a lot to finish the season like this," added the Italian.
"This is the end of the season. I had a similar feeling last year, but last year was different. This year it's more intense, stronger, for various reasons. It was a very emotional moment," reflected the "Azzurro" tennis player.
"Honestly, I am not thinking about the Grand Slam, nor do I want to think about it. I will go to Australia to give my best. We will see what happens. After Australia, there are other tournaments, and in each one I want to give my all," clarified Sinner, who will seek his third consecutive title at the first "Major" of the upcoming season.
"If we win, good; if we lose, we will try to improve. I have never thought about the Grand Slam, and honestly, I don't think about it," Sinner insisted during the press conference regarding the possibility of winning all four major tournaments in the same calendar year.
Coach's Perspective
Simone Vagnozzi, who coaches Sinner alongside Australian Darren Cahill, also spoke: "It was a very exciting and closely contested match. We saw Jannik fight throughout the match, with a good attitude, and he always believed in himself, even in the second set," he highlighted.
"We are very happy with his performance. I believe there are still aspects to improve, even after this victory. The match demonstrates that we can do better, but we are satisfied with this season finale and excited for the start of the next one," added Vagnozzi.
"Our goal for the next season is to be very aggressive. I believe Jannik has been consistent throughout the year and has improved year after year, both in variety and confidence," assessed the Italian coach.
"We are happy with how his serve is working now. I think we are on the right path and we are very motivated to continue like this. Winning this kind of match at home is wonderful, and the fact that he fell to the floor shows how happy he was," remarked Vagnozzi.
"I am a coach who likes to build, not manage, and this year we will also try to incorporate good things, to give Jannik as many opportunities as possible to be the best player for the next 10 years," completed the Italian coach.
Alcaraz's Response
The consolation for Alcaraz is that he had already secured finishing the season at the top of the rankings after his victory in the "Round Robin" against Italian Lorenzo Musetti (9), who replaced Djokovic in the tournament and concluded his participation with one win and two losses.
"I leave the court with my head held high. I am very happy with the level I showed against a player who has been undefeated indoors for two years. After every defeat, Jannik always comes back stronger, congratulations," expressed Alcaraz in turn.
"Now it's time for a break. To prepare well for next year, because I am also preparing myself," joked Alcaraz, who thanked his team for a "splendid season" and the Turin crowd, "who obviously cheered a bit more for Jannik, but never disrespected me."
"At the beginning of the match, I thought I could beat him, that I could compete with him. I was not surprised at all to have been so close. I am very happy with my performance today. I am sure my level on indoor courts will continue to improve," Alcaraz later stated confidently.
"Of course, I have noticed Jannik's improvement. I have said it many times: I think a player like him always recovers from defeats stronger. He always learns from them. Once again, he has demonstrated that. Especially with the serve, putting maximum pressure on you. It is very difficult to play against him," the Spaniard praised his rival in the press conference.
"The season is practically over, so we already have the preseason. I will try to do everything possible to improve and start the season even stronger," concluded the Spaniard, who finished 2025 with 8 titles, including Roland Garros and the US Open, in whose finals he defeated Sinner, who considered that Alcaraz "deserves to be number one and I am happy for him."
Season Recap and Rivalry
For his part, Sinner closed 2025 with seven titles, having already won the Australian Open, the Paris Masters 1000, the ATP 500 events in Beijing and Vienna, and also had the pleasure of conquering the Wimbledon crown for the first time, in whose final he celebrated his only victory of the year against Alcaraz.
Another reason for joy for Sinner, who reached 31 consecutive wins on fast courts (undefeated since his loss to Djokovic in the 2023 ATP Finals final), is that he celebrated his sixth victory in 16 duels with the Spaniard, who defeated him in 4 of their 5 matches this year (except the one at Wimbledon), all in finals, as Alcaraz also bettered him in the finals of the Masters 1000 in Rome and Cincinnati.
In contrast, Alcaraz suffered the disappointment of not being able to join his compatriots Manuel Orantes and Alex Corretja, the only Spaniards who won the "Masters Tournament" in 1976 and 1998, respectively.
The match, which began after the group Il Volo sang the Italian national anthem, experienced two interruptions, both during the first set. The first was due to a 60-year-old spectator feeling unwell 15 minutes after the start, while the second occurred when Alcaraz requested assistance for his right leg with the score 5-4 in favor of Sinner.
