Landslide Buries Campground in Rain-Hit North Island
Several people were reported missing on Thursday after a landslide swept through a campground in the rain-battered north of New Zealand, according to police and rescue services.

Mud buried a shower block at the campsite located at the foot of the extinct Mount Maunganui volcano, as shown in videos and photographs released by local media.

Rescue Mission Underway Amid Ongoing Instability
Emergency services reported hearing voices from beneath the rubble. "While the land is still moving there, it's a rescue mission," Police Deputy Commissioner Tim Anderson told the press. "I can't give numbers. What I can say is it's a small number," he added.

The landslide affected several camper vans and the bathroom building of the campground, situated on the North Island in an area hit by heavy rains.

Site Evacuated as Risk of Further Landslides Remains
Individuals at the site attempted to dig through the debris and heard voices, Fire and Emergency Commander William Pike reported. "Our initial fire crew arrived and could hear the same," he stated.

However, rescuers had to evacuate everyone present due to the risk of further landslides.
