London, Mar 12 (Prensa Latina) The English Premier League announced today the disqualification of Russian millionaire Roman Abramovich as director of Chelsea, after the sanctions applied by the British government for the Russian military operation in Ukraine.

The board of the sports organization clarified the decision to remove Abramovich from his position, who also owns the club, but does not prevent the team from continuing to train and compete.

Last Thursday, the British government added the Chelsea owner and six other Russian billionaires to the country’s already long list of Eurasian individuals and entities sanctioned for their alleged links to the Kremlin.

As part of the punitive measures, all assets held by these individuals and organizations in the UK were frozen and their entry permits revoked.

Although the sanctions prevent Abramovich from selling the club he bought in 2003, the Premier League said the government would be open to granting a license to allow it to change hands.

Russia launched on February 24 what President Vladimir Putin described as a special military operation in the Ukrainian autonomous region of Donbass, after the authorities of the self-proclaimed people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk asked for help to repel the aggression of the armed nationalist forces.

The United Kingdom, the United States, the European Union and the rest of the allies of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization have implemented economic and financial sanctions against Moscow.
