The Other Yearend

While I was wondering what we’ll eat at home on December 31st, a question that keeps so many Cubans in suspense at the near disappearance of pigs, once recognized by Creole humor as a "national mammal," or scared at the excessive prices that sets us at the only option to keep eating chicken, in short, while this dilemma was haunting me, it occurred to me to google: hunger + end of the year + Latin America and I pressed "News".
I will only relate two or three headlines and summaries of some foreign media.
Let's start with ABC. From Spain they assure that "FAO confirms that the pandemic has canceled the progress that the region had registered until 2014." The text dates from December 7th of this year and, although I have promised to stay only in the summary, there are shocking details, such as the fact that the numbers of people who have suffered from hunger in this period set records so far in this century.
The ABC headline: "Hunger soars in Latin America to its highest level in 15 years.
A more recent one from Telemundo website. Headline: "Hunger will increase in Latin America in the face of a new wave of Covid-19, according to experts." Date: 12/21/2021
Summary: "One out of 10 people live with hunger in Latin America, a figure that increased during the pandemic and that may grow even more with the waves of COVID-19, according to experts."
Noticiasrcn.com reports: "Hunger hits families more and more in Brazil and donations from NGOs are vital as the end of the year festivities approach." Title: What will I eat tomorrow? Hunger gains ground and more in Christmas. Date: 12/25/2021
"The end of the year smells of shopping sprees, congratulations, and postcards with renewal vows", and I, who know of the other world that begs at front doors, I’ll write a song"... Silvio sings in my headphones. I listen and meanwhile I find out about another end of the year that is around, I feel less desolate for this end of the year of mine without roast pork and without hunger.
