Managua, Jan 31 (Prensa Latina) The president of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, received a letter of thanks on behalf of his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, for the congratulations sent on occasion of the New Year's celebration in the Asian country.

The letter alluded to the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries and how, in less than two months, bilateral cooperation is already experiencing fruitful results, evidenced in the signing of economic agreements and housing programs.

The Chinese president expressed his commitment to the expansion and development of ties in this new year and his willingness to work together to “deepen political trust, exchange in various spheres and the social welfare of the two peoples.”

After more than three decades of ties with Taiwan, established since 1990 with the assumption of power by Violeta Barrios and the beginning of 16 years of neoliberal governments, Nicaragua decided to break official relations with that territory and issue recognition to a single China.

The decision, approved on December 9, determined the opening of a Beijing embassy in Managua 22 days later and the consolidation of future agreements in fields such as science, technology, education, health, art, culture, sports, media and transportation.

During the installation ceremony, the Nicaraguan Foreign Minister, Denis Moncada, assured the promotion of ties based on mutual respect for sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs, the dignity and territorial integrity of the states and their right to have social security systems.
