At the weather station in Indio Hatuey, Matanzas province, a minimum temperature of 5.7 degrees Celsius was recorded early this morning, the lowest in the current winter season in Cuba.
Laura Leivat, a specialist at the Forecast Center of the Meteorology Institute, told Granma newspaper that there were other reports of temperatures below 10 degrees in Bainoa with 6.8; Santo Domingo, Villa Clara, 7.8; Jovellanos, 8.1; José Martí International Airport, Havana, 8.4; Bauta, 8.5; Güines, 9.5; Jagüey Grande, 9.6; Abel Santamaría International Airport, Villa Cara, 9.7; and Aguada de Pasajeros, Cienfuegos, 9.8.
At Havana’s Casablanca station, the minimum temperature was 14.0 degrees Celsius.
This significant drop in temperatures resulted from the influence of a cold, dry and stable air mass of Arctic origin, together with weak winds and little cloud cover at night, which favored the cooling of the surface by radiation.
The national record for minimum temperature is 0.6 degrees Celsius and was established in Bainoa, on February 18, 1996.
