Literacy program in Honduras advances with Cuba’s advice

The national literacy program promoted by the Honduran government with the advice of Cuban methodology specialists is advancing at a good pace, authorities reported.

The Minister of Education of Honduras, Daniel Sponda, reported that more than 30,000 persons are currently receiving classes, and more than a hundred Cubans are advising in the “Yo sí Puedo” teaching method.

“We are sure that hand in hand with Cuban advice, we are going to declare this year more than 100 municipalities in the country free of illiteracy,” he said.

Sponda gave his statements after a meeting with his Cuban counterpart, Ena Elsa Velázquez, who made a working visit accompanied by the Cuban Vice Minister of Education, Eugenio González, and the representative of the Cuban educational mission, Clay Pérez.

The Minister of the Cuban Ministry of Education told the press that she held a meeting with President Xiomara Castro, to whom she ratified Cuba’s commitment to assist Honduras in requested programs.

Velázquez described the meeting with the president “as very fruitful”, as well as those held with the president of Congress, Luis Redondo and other ministers such as Foreign Minister Enrique Reina and the Minister of Strategic Planning Ricardo Salgado.
