Latin American women condemned unilateral coercive measures such as the blockade on Cuba

Buenos Aires, Nov 11 (RHC) The 15th Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean on Friday rejected unilateral coercive measures such as the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba for more than six decades.

On its last day of debates, representatives of governments and organizations, academics, and members of civil society condemned these actions as a violation of human rights.

This was reflected in the Buenos Aires Commitment, which also pointed out that these policies undermine the development of countries and generate social inequalities with impacts on the lives of women, especially in times of crisis.

During the meeting, the secretary general of the Federation of Cuban Women, Teresa Amarelle, explained that the U.S. blockade is a major obstacle to the implementation of social programs on the island and affects the capacity to respond to situations such as the Covid-19 pandemic.

She also criticized the inclusion of Cuba in a list of alleged sponsors of terrorism drawn up by Washington and expressed her gratitude for the support of numerous countries in the face of these aggressions.

Convened by ECLAC and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, the main theme of the Conference was The Caring Society: Horizon for a Sustainable Recovery with Equality and included parallel activities. (Source: PL)
