“Most of our generation have not listened to the music made by La Sonora, and those artists were major drivers of the Cuban identity worldwide. That is why we wanted to honor them.”

Is it about retaking and covering La Sonora’s songs?

These songs are La Sonora’s originals. We did not want to change anything. Same concept, same arrangement, just a little change, with modern’s sound, obviously; but only using today’s technology.

I did all the production work and was also involved in the singing part. Besides, other artists such as Haila María Mompié, Maikel Dinza, and Yuri Buenaventura —from Colombia— were also involved.

The album is already finished. We scheduled the album release in a way that we can send it to the 2024 Grammy Awards on time.

It would not be the first time your name pops up in this event, right?

We made an album with Orquesta Aragón and resulted in a Grammy Award. I treasure over eleven Grammy nominations. However, being nominated does not always result in winning it. So, we are glad to be here and it really helps us as a platform.

We do not make albums to be awarded, but to help that sort of music lasts forever, and that is the Cuban music of all times.

Are there other projects?

We will be working in Europe from May on. We are going to split it into two parts: first, the initial stage between May and June, and a second stage on July.

We hope to be back in Cuba by August to attend the Josone Music Festival.
