Chilean writer Isabel Allende, author of the best-selling novel The House of the Spirits (1982), strongly criticized the behavior of former U.S. President Donald Trump toward women, his influence on society, and the vulnerability of gender rights in extreme political situations.

Widely regarded as the most-read living Spanish-language author and known for other bestsellers such as Eva LunaDaughter of FortunePaula, and Inés of My Soul, Allende stated that at this stage in her life, she is unconcerned with pleasing others or public opinion.

In this context, she addressed the current reality in the United States, where she has lived since 1988 and has been a citizen since 2003.

"In the United States, it’s very noticeable how Trump’s misogyny, his disrespect for women, his crudeness, all of that has permeated society," the author remarked in an interview with Radio Cooperativa.

"The Supreme Court has been stripping away women’s rights, as well as those of trans people and the LGBTQ+ community. They are eliminating rights, and it’s very difficult," Allende added. "Whenever the opportunity arises, they take something away from women. That’s why we must always stay vigilant. Look at what’s happening in Afghanistan—the Taliban took over, and within 24 hours, women lost everything, absolutely everything."

At 83 years old (born August 2, 1942) and currently promoting her latest novel, My Name Is Emilia del Valle (Plaza & Janés, 2025), Allende—a well-known feminist—has previously spoken out against Trump. She has even hinted at leaving the U.S. if the political climate worsens, stating last May, "I don’t want to live under a dictatorship."
