Echevarria, 22 , is the leader of the current season in his category. He won in the 2018 indoor world championship and won the bronze medal in the 2019 outdoor world championship.
This athlete, from the province of Camagüey, has kept world-class stable jumps since 2018, and that of 8.68 m has been the best so far, ranked 11 in the history of this category.
The regularity and power of his results make him, in the opinion of experts and the IOC, a strong candidate to break American Mike Powell's world record.
The American jumper has the highest record achieved by a human being, at 8.95 m, since 1991, which another Cuban, Sydney 2000 Olympic champion Ivan Pedroso was close to break.
Pedroso has the highest record for a Cuban jumper, at 8.71 m in 1995, which this young talent can also reach.
So far in 2021, Echevarria has won at the indoor championships of Karlsruhe, Germany, with 8.18 m; Lievin, France, with 8.25 m; and Madrid, Spain, with the lowest jump so far: 8.14 m.
