Cuban athletes Leyanis Pérez and Liadagmis Povea reaffirmed their dominance in women’s triple jump today at the Brescia Grand Prix in Italy, capturing gold and silver with world-class marks.
Pérez claimed victory with a leap of 14.92 meters, just one centimeter short of her season-best and personal record of 14.93 meters, a mark that secured her the gold medal at the 2025 World Indoor Championships in Nanjing.
A native of Pinar del Río in western Cuba, Pérez opened the competition with a jump of 14.22 meters, followed by an impressive series of 14.86, 14.92, 14.66, 14.92, and 14.81 meters.
Experts highlighted that this performance, with four jumps exceeding 14.80 meters, was the most consistent and dominant display of the season by the current world number one.
At the event held at the Gabre Gabric Stadium as part of the World Continental Tour Silver series, Povea delivered her best result of the year with a jump of 14.84 meters on her fourth attempt. That effort surpassed her previous season-best of 14.57 meters, achieved on January 31 at the Miramas meeting in France.
A silver medalist at the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing, Povea found her top form in the fourth round following a shaky start that included a sub-14-meter jump and three fouls.
According to World Athletics, the 29-year-old’s mark ranks third among the season’s top performances and places her second overall, as the two best distances belong to her teammate Leyanis Pérez.
Jamaican Shanieka Ricketts, a two-time world silver medalist, finished third with a jump of 14.56 meters. Bulgaria’s Gabriela Petrova placed fourth with 14.41 meters, her best result of the season.
With this 1-2 finish, the Cuban triple jumpers solidified their status as leading contenders heading into the premier event of the year, the World Athletics Championships, set to take place in Tokyo, Japan, from September 13 to 21.
Cuba’s Greysis Robles, who has qualified for the World Championships in the 100-meter hurdles, also competed at the Italian Grand Prix. She finished fifth with a time of 12.98 seconds.
Although Robles did not match her personal best of 12.71 seconds, the performance remained within her typical range and earned her valuable ranking points, according to specialized media.
The event was won by American Alia Armstrong with a time of 12.53 seconds. She was followed by teammates Masai Russell (12.69 seconds) and Alexandra Webster (12.71 seconds), who completed the podium.
