United Nations, Jul 29 (Prensa Latina) Due to the crisis generated by the Covid-19 pandemic that is currently hitting the world, seven million more children under the age of five could suffer from severe acute malnutrition this year, UNICEF reported.

According to a report from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), 80% of these children would be from sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.

UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore indicated that seven months since the first Covid-19 cases were reported in the world, it is increasingly clear that the repercussions of the pandemic are causing more harm to children.

Before the pandemic, 47 million minors were already wasted and now the crisis -which caused a rise in food prices and increased poverty rates- could reach almost 54 million, a level never seen this millennium, Fore said.

At least US$2.4 billion is needed by that agency to invest in the protection of those most vulnerable minors.
