The documentary 'Havana Comes to Brooklyn', by Venezuelan director América Maldonado, reflects today the cultural ties between Cuba and the United States on the big screen of the 42nd International Latin American Film Festival.

The audiovisual work shows moments of a tour starring the American pianist Simone Dinnerstein together with the Lyceum Orchestra of Havana, the first great musical group of young Cubans to arrive in Brooklyn since 1959.

The material, nominated for the NY Emmy Awards in 2018, was shot during the normalization process of bilateral relations promoted by the administration of President Barack Obama.

Havana arrives in Brooklyn is part of the Culture section in the renowned film event and demonstrates the potential of art and music as a way to understand relations between the northern country and the island, which have suffered U.S. economic and commercial blockade on Cuba for 60 years.

For her part, the Venezuelan director based in New York has a remarkable career of documentary production with works such as Cosmic Race, winner at the XIII Vebron Festival in France.

A graduate of The New School in Manhattan, Maldonado worked for networks with a wide global reach, including HBO, Discovery channel, MTV, History Channel, Animal Planet, Own Network.
