Havana, September 3 (RHC) -- Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galeano would have been 80 years old today and, to remember his last visit to the capital, Casa de las Américas will premiere the documentary Espejos. A story in Havana.

The documentary by director Esther Barroso will be screened through the Casa de las Américas YouTube channel at 4:00 p.m. local time, and will simultaneously be broadcast on the Multivisión TV channel.

According to a statement, the work - a joint project between the Casa de las Américas cultural institution and Cubavisión Internacional-  is a testimony of the Uruguayan writer’s last visit to this island in January 2012, the date on which he was invited to participate in the 53rd edition of the Casa de las Américas literary award. On January 16 of that year, Galeano inaugurated the Casa Award at the institution’s Che Guevara hall.

The text itself details that, the next day, in the same room, packed with his Cuban readers, Galeano presented his book Espejos. Una historia casi universal, with which he won, in 2011, the José María Arguedas Narrative Prize awarded by the Cuban institution. Galeano has been considered one of the most influential writers on the Latin American left and his most popular books: Las Venas Abiertas de América Latina (1971) and Memoria del Fuego (1986) been translated into 20 languages.

Mirrors. A history in Havana offers the possibility of getting closer to the writer’s work and thought, a great friend of Cuba and the Casa de las Américas, as recognized by the cultural institution.
