Diaz-Canel heads meeting to assess the impact of tropical storm Eta

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, headed a meeting on Sunday to assess the damage caused so far by Tropical Storm Eta as it passes through the center of the island.

According to national television, at a  meeting of the National Defense Council, the provinces of Sancti Spíritus, Ciego de Ávila (center), and Granma (east), the most affected by the weather, reported on the current situation in their territories.

It was also informed that more than 74 thousand people were protected in the country, of which about eight thousand were in evacuation centers, and up to the moment of that contact, no human losses or significant damage in houses were reported.

Diaz-Canel warned that Eta may still damage the island due to the planned trajectory through the Florida Straits. He urged authorities to remain vigilant and maintain the protection measures.

Eta left the national territory Sunday morning by the north coast of Ciego de Avila (center), and it was expected to move northwest towards the Gulf of Mexico, generating rainfall on the western territory, reported the Institute of Meteorology.

Most of the island, especially the central and western provinces, remain alert to the possibility of being affected by the rains, winds, and costal flooding related to the storm.
