Havana, Aug 18 (Prensa Latina) The Cuban Tourism Ministry (MINTUR, in Spanish) urged for steps aimed at a more sustainable sector in order to generate employment and promote the country's culture and domestic products, according to a local media.

MINTUR’s Development Specialist Saray Álvarez told the Cuban News Agency (ACN, in Spanish) the Cuban tourism is closely linked to environmental policy, through the National Environmental Strategy and the State Plan to fight climate change.

Álvarez stressed that MINTUR is rolling out about 21 initiatives as part of its Development Plan and in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN 2030 Agenda.

Among these measures are the declaration of special zones for a better tourism activity, with the goal of reaching a more sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources, she said, while emphasizing that the studies of danger, vulnerability and risk in these zones are periodically updated.

Likewise, Álvarez explained that MINTUR’s priorities are to continue with the recovery and conservation of sandy beaches, to contribute with renewable energy sources to the national electricity generation matrix and to strive for a much better water management in tourism sector.
