Cuban wrestler Gabriel Rosillo became Friday his country's first Greco-Roman style athlete to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, reaching the final of the 97-kg division at the 2023 World Wrestling Championships in this capital.

Rosillo won a tough semifinal match against Iran’s Mohammad Hadi Saravi, who won a gold medal at the 2021 World Wrestling Championships and bronze medals at the 2020 World Wrestling Championships and the 2020 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo, defeating him 3-0.

He previously defeated German wrestler Peter Öhler 9-1, Russia’s Artur Sargsian 5-1, Uzbekistan’s Rustam Assakalov 6-4, and Belarus’ Abubakar Khaslakhanau 8-5. In the final, he will face Armenia’s Artur Aleksanyan, the current world champion and Olympic gold, silver and bronze medallist.

Cuba could secure another ticket to the Paris Olympics this Friday with athlete Oscar Pino, who will be fighting for a bronze medal in the 130-kg category.

Cuban Milaimys Marín also achieved her qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympics, in women’s 76-kg freestyle.
