Havana, Aug 16 (Prensa Latina) Cuban sports is mourning the death on Saturday of former boxer Jorge Luis Romero, silver medalist at the First World Amateur Boxing Championship, held in Havana in 1974.
Recalled for his offensive actions, Romero, who fought in the 54-kg division, debuted in that world championship, where he defeated Jose Caba, from the Dominican Republic, and later beat John Byaruhanga, from Uganda, and Hugo Aguilera, from Argentina.
Under the tutelage of his main trainer, Alcides Sagarra, Romero also defeated David Torosyan, from the Soviet Union, but lost the gold-medal fight to Wilfredo Gomez, from Puerto Rico.
'Mourning in Cuban sports, which lost one of its glories,' the president of the Cuban Sports Institute, Osvaldo Vento, wrote on his Twitter account.
Local media have highlighted Romero's sports career, which also included the gold medal at the 1969 Giraldo Cordova Cardin Tournament, and being a member of Cuba's boxing teams at several international competitions.
