The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, regretted on Saturday the death of the prominent journalist Max Lesnik, in a post published on his account on the social network X.

"Our heartfelt condolences to his daughter Vivien and other relatives and friends of Max Lesnik, an irreducible follower of Martí who has just passed away in Miami."

"For his defense of Cuba and the normalization of relations with the United States, he suffered anti-Cuban terrorism, without ever giving up," the head of state said on the social network X.

Lesnik died this Saturday at the age of 94 in Miami, where he lived since 1961.

Director of Radio Miami and founder of the Alianza Martiana, Lesnik always defended the sovereignty and independence of his country and advocated for rapprochement between Cuba and the United States.

Founder of the magazine Réplica in the 1970s, he suffered threats and attempted attacks.  At least 11 bombs were placed at the headquarters of the publication in the 1980s, which did not stop his activism.

Max Lesnik was born on September 8, 1930 in San Antonio de las Vueltas, in the current municipality of Camajuaní, Villa Clara, a province located in the central region of Cuba.

During his career, he was a journalist of political opposition against the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista (1952-1959) and after settling in the United States he maintained ties with his country of origin.

On the occasion of his 94th birthday, Lesnik told Prensa Latina: “Cuba is in my heart" -- saying that he would continue until his last breath in the fight against the aggressive foreign policy of the White House.

Rather than celebrating a birthday, Max Lesnik emphasized that he preferred to pay “tribute to the country that suffers from the criminal blockade of the United States.”  This was the case until his last day.
