Cuban para-tennis player Yunier Fernández was crowned Paralympic champion today at the Paris 2024 Games, after sweeping British Robert Davies 3-0 sets in the final of the MS1 category.
Fernández, a native of the Artemisa municipality of Guanajay, in the west of the island, came out ahead after a very disputed initial set, decided in his favor 14-12, but then imposed his rhythm with easy scores of 11-7 and 11-4, which gave him the dreamed golden title.
The Cuban para-tennis player and his coach Reldis Ortega exploded with joy at the South Arena in Paris, after winning the fifth gold medal for the Cuban delegation in this edition of the Paralympic Games.
Fernández thus surpassed his performance in the previous Tokyo 2020 event, when he finished in fourth place.
