In the Paraguayan Olympic Committee Plaza, the wind will make the flags of 41 countries dance today as a ceremonial prelude to the II Junior Pan American Games.
From early in the morning, the city breathes an Olympic spirit. Drums can be heard, traditional costumes can be seen, and the vertigo of what is imminent can be felt. It’s Friday, but everything has the flavor of the eve.
Around the Pan American Village, languages are exchanged, hugs are exchanged, selfies are taken, freshly ironed uniforms are worn, and dreams are set to debut.
Cuba, faithful to its sporting history, will raise its national flag with the dignity of someone who has never competed only for medals, but also for pride. There are 231 athletes representing the island, trained amidst hardship and hope, determined to shine in 28 sports and 42 disciplines.
This afternoon’s symbolic act will mark the spiritual beginning of the Games featuring the continent’s future Olympic champions. Tomorrow, the flame will be lit in the Defensores del Chaco Stadium, but today, with the flags raised, the soul of the event begins to beat.
And when the lone star rises above them all, it will also be the image of a Cuba that, even in the face of difficulty, continues to speak out in its fight to place among the top of the continental medal table.
