Cuba strikes gold and bronze in NORCECA

Havana, Cuba, May 8 (ACN) Cuba closed today with one bronze and two gold medals the second stop of the North, Central America and Caribbean (NORCECA) beach volleyball tournament in Varadero Beach.
The crowns went to Leila Martinez and Ledianny Echeverria, the best Cuban women’s duo, who beat Canada’s main team, and to Miguel Angel Ayon-Yosvani Carrasco, the second best male couple, who prevailed over the U.S. duo of Mewhirter-Brewster. Cuba’s No. 1 pair of Noslen Diaz and Jorge Luis Alayo finished third.
Leila and Lidianny will compete in the world championships in Rome, Italy after they won in the qualifiers recently held in the Dominican Republic’s resort of Punta Cana. So did Diaz and Alayo, who won in turn the first NORCECA stop in Aguascalientes, Mexico.
The Varadero tournament featured female and male couples from Cuba, Canada, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, U.S. Virgin Islands, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the United States. Belize, Jamaica and St. Kitts and Nevis only competed with men.
