Havana, Cuba – Cuba will field 18 competitors at the wrestling qualifying tournament for the 2026 Santo Domingo Central American and Caribbean Games.
Martín Torres, the national commissioner for the sport, told JIT that the event will be held from the 5th to the 7th of this month in Panama. The island has registered its top six men in both Greco-Roman and freestyle, and its top female wrestlers in the latter discipline.
The Greco-Roman team will be led by Luis Orta (67 kg), the Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion. He will be joined by Kevin de Armas (60 kg), Yoel Antomarchi (77 kg), Daniel Gregorich (87 kg), world champion Gabriel Rosillo (97 kg), and multi-medalist Oscar Pino (130 kg).
Among the freestyle wrestlers, Arturo Silot (97 kg) stands out—gold medalist at the 2023 San Salvador Central American and Caribbean Games and a participant in the recent Olympic Games in the French capital.
Also featured is Geannis Garzón (86 kg), who won bronze this year at the U-23 World Championship in Novi Sad.
The squad is rounded out by Vladimir Vila (57 kg), Jean Carlos Olivero (65 kg), Orislandy Perdomo (74 kg), and Yosenki Castañeda (125 kg).
The women's freestyle team is led by Olympic bronze medalist Milaimy Marín (76 kg) and Yaynelis Sanz (57 kg), a double gold medalist at the Pan American Junior Games and owner of a third-place finish at the U-23 World event in Novi Sad.
They will be accompanied by Greili Bencosme (50 kg), Laura Herín (53 kg), María Fernanda Santana (62 kg), and Brenda Elizabeth Sterling (68 kg).
The goal is for all wrestlers to return with qualifying spots for next year's regional competition, where the sport is expected to be one of the top contributors to the Cuban delegation's medal tally.
