Cuba promotes biodiversity conservation

The Eastern Center for Ecosystems and Biodiversity (BIOECO) in this city promotes actions to strengthen and guarantee the protection of biological diversity and ecological and evolutionary processes in Cuba and the Caribbean.
Carmen Placencia, head of BIOECO’s Animal Biology Department, referred to the development of a monitoring project organized jointly with the Caribbean Biological Corridor (CBC) to boost the protection of regional biodiversity, ecosystems and species.
To this end, BIOECO used for the first time satellite and technological monitoring techniques in ecosystems of several provinces, the results of which were posted on the CBC website along with reports of more than 30 actions and measures to tackle threats to the local and regional flora and fauna.
Among other accomplishments, the official mentioned more than 200 hours of lectures and training courses for specialists from protected areas, students, and other people interested in conservation.
Established for educational purposes, BIOECO conducts specialized and interdisciplinary studies to define and characterize the areas of greatest interest for biodiversity, as well as methods to improve its conservation, rational use, and sustainable ecological, cultural, economic and social development.
