Havana, Jan 18 (Prensa Latina) The Cuban ImmunoEnsayo Center on Wednesday launched the first glucometer prototype designed and produced in the country.

“InmunoEnsayo presented to Eduardo Martinez, Biotechnological and Pharmaceutical Industries (BioCubaFarma) President, the first glucometer prototype designed and produced in Cuba,” the scientific institution announced on Twitter.

The glucometer is a device used to measure and display the amount of sugar (glucose) in your blood. Its use is pivotal for people diagnosed with diabetes mellitus.

In Cuba, according to preliminary data at the end of 2020, diabetes mellitus has a prevalence of 66.9 per thousand inhabitants.

Specialists say those suffering from diabetes mellitus have a weaker immune system and the increased blood glucose (hyperglycemia) can compromise innate immunity and humoral immunity.
