Local press reported today that Cuba has more than 600 navigation rooms and 1,900 public places where citizens can connect to the Internet through the Wifi network.

At present, Nauta Hogar Internet service is available in more than 282,000 homes and there is a marked intention to prioritize rural populations, said the vice-president of Empresa de Telecomunicaciones de Cuba S.A., Adolfo Martinez.

The progress in Cuba is taking place amid the tightening of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States on the Caribbean nation for six decades, said Martinez in the context of the tenth edition of the regional event America Accessible, which is being held in Varadero, in the western province of Matanzas.

Cuba’s Deputy Minister of Communications, Ernesto Rodriguez, stressed that one of the main challenges is to support people in vulnerable situations and defend the culture of our indigenous peoples and their identity values.

According to Granma newspaper, the meeting called for the elimination of all barriers to access in this field, in which it is important to integrate knowledge, ideas and experiences.
