Chile: Victor Jara tribute will have online version

Santiago de Chile, Sep 6 (Prensa Latina) 'A thousand guitars for Víctor Jara', the yearly tribute paid in Chile to the iconic singer-songwriter killed by the dictatorship, will be held in 2020 in an online version due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

On September 25, this virtual Thousand Guitars will be broadcast, with the participation of hundreds of guitarists, men, women, children, young people and older adults, who this time required a greater effort because they have had to rehearse at home and coordinate everything through virtual meetings and email.

As has been the case for eight years, the meeting will bring together prominent artists to honor the creator of emblematic songs such as I remember you Amanda, Plegaria del labrador and The right to live in peace, turned into an anthem of the great popular demonstrations after October 18 of 2019.

Among those who have already confirmed, there are figures such as Claudia Acuña, Nano Stern, Moral Distraída, Freddy Torrealba, Francesca Ancarola, Pedro Foncea, Víctor Heredia, Eli Morris, Natalia Contesse, Pancho Sazo, Magdalena Mathey and Manuel García, reported Cooperativa.cl.

In addition, the tribute will feature interviews with personalities from culture, music and society, who met Jara and will bring the public closer to the life of the singer-songwriter, such as Jorge Coulon, a member of the group Inti Illimani, and the renowned muralist Alejandro 'Mono 'González.

'A thousand guitars for Víctor Jara' is carried out by the Recoleta Cultural Corporation, commune of this capital, in collaboration with the Víctor Jara Foundation and the Recoleta Municipality.

Víctor Jara is recognized worldwide as one of the main references of Chilean music and popular artistic creation, with a long career as a singer-songwriter that creatively links him to the emblematic groups Quilapayún and Inti Illimani.

A communist militant, from 1970 he redoubled his political commitment by actively participating in the electoral campaigns of the Popular Unity and in the government of Salvador Allende.

On September 11, 1973, he went to carry out his usual duties at the Technical University of the State, where, along with hundreds of students and teachers, he was taken prisoner by coup troops who took him to the Chile Stadium where he was brutally tortured and murdered a few days later.
