The General Secretary of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, called for more humanitarian support to the Syrian people to face the consequences of recent earthquakes, the organization reported.

During a meeting with the UN special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, the official praised the speed of the Arab response to the catastrophe in that country, spokesman Jamal Rushdi said in a statement.

The spokesman explained that the meeting also addressed the crisis in Syria, which has suffered a war imposed from overseas since 2011.

Both parties reiterated the need to promote dialogue in search of a political solution to the situation in the country.

Pedersen also met yesterday with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, who urged resuming talks and defended Syria’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Shoukry called for an end to violence, terrorism and foreign interference to put a stop to the suffering of the Syrian people.

The head of the Egyptian diplomacy briefed Pedersen on Egypt’s support to Syria, following the recent earthquakes that devastated large parts of Syria, and his recent visit to Damascus.

In turn, the UN’ envoy referred to his efforts to promote a negotiated solution to the conflict in Syria.
