Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz made his Miami Open debut on Saturday with an impeccable performance against his compatriot Roberto Carballés.
In the women’s draw, meanwhile, Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka, who has had a very difficult week due to the death of her ex-boyfriend, fell in the second round against Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina.
The rain that delayed play on Friday returned on Saturday in the early hours, but later the Miami tournament was able to recover much of the lost ground.
With his second Indian Wells in a row already in the bag, Alcaraz (seeded second) gave no quarter to his Carballés (64) and won his tournament debut 6-2, 6-1 in one hour and 25 minutes.
In the third round he will face Frenchman Gael Monfils (n.47), who came from behind against the Australian Jordan Thompson (34).
The other top contenders in this Masters 1000, such as the Italian Jannik Sinner (n.3), the Russian Daniil Medvedev (n.4) and the German Alexander Zverev (n.5), also advanced to the next round.
In the women’s draw, Sabalenka (n.2) was unable to overcome Kalinina (n.36) and ended up breaking her racquet after the defeat.
WTA No. 1, Poland’s Iga Swiatek, punched her ticket to the next round along with other top players such as Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina (No. 4) and Greece’s Maria Sakkari (No. 9).
In addition to Sabalenka, Tunisian Ons Jabeur (n.6) and the Latvian Jelena Ostapenko (n.10 were also eliminated from the tournament.
