We owe the privilege of having an open, inclusive and democratic organization to the socialist Revolution. A unique organization in the world, since there is no other which brings together writers and artists like ours.

The aforesaid was stated by President of the National Union of Cuban Artists and Writers (UNEAC) Miguel Barnet, in a press conference offered this Tuesday for the 55th anniversary of that institution, founded by Fidel on August 22, 1961, shortly after the First Congress of Cuban Writers and Artists.

Since then, “we have grown in number, but also intellectually and ideologically and in our social commitment”, stressed Barnet, who highlighted the presence of our writers and artists in the community. He said that in the design of the Cuban cultural policy UNEAC membership’s viewpoints are relevant, and each of the five associations making up this organization have autonomy to develop their programs.

UNEAC vice-president Luis Morlote referred to the activities taking place across the country to mark the anniversary and delved into the recruitment process recently developed which allowed the enlisting of almost one thousand new members. This 2016, he said, we are tasked with the organization of the 4th UNEAC National Council on September 13 and 14, and the provincial assemblies will take place in November.

A cultural gala will be the main celebration to take place next 22 at 8: 00 pm at Havana’s Alicia Alonso Theater, where an exhibition of works from plastic artists will welcome the attendants.
