Billboard magazine, which publishes the weekly official list of album sales in the U.S. based on information provided by Nielsen Soundscan, said that rapper Eminem's "The Eminem Show," was just ahead of "1989," as it sold 1.32 million copies by its second week of release.
Swift's new album showed that the U.S. star is still achieving high sales. Her previous album, "Red," finished as the second most successful album worldwide in 2012. Its sales in 2013 reached over 1.9 million copies.
"1989," which is Swift's fifth album, has become the best-selling record in the U.S. for 2014, ahead of "Ghost Stories" by Coldplay.
Swift has also become the only performer in the United States to have surpassed the one-million-copies in one week barrier on three occasions. Her albums "Red" and "Speak Now" sold 1.20 million and 1.04 million copies, respectively.
These numbers are all the more impressive due to the fact that, since 1991, only 12 albums have achieved sales of over a million copies in one week, and three of them were by the 24-year-old performer.
