Cuban therapeutic vaccine CIMAVAX EGF, from the Institute of Molecular Engineering (IME), began this year a new clinical trial which extends the use of this treatment against lung cancer of no small cells to polyclinics all over the country.

At the 3rd Provincial Workshop on Clinical Trials, Geidy Lorenzo, promoter of such trial, explained that the research goal is to standardize and regularize the drug administration to the primary health care.

Its low toxicity, minimal occurrence of side effects, and ease of subcutaneous implementation, allow the drug to be delivered in drug stores easy to find by patients, reported the specialist.

The provinces of Villa Clara and Havana have at least one polyclinic per municipalities implementing this trial. Gradually, this process will extend to the rest of the country in 2016.

Dr. Ramon Ortiz, coordinator in Villa Clara, commented that the use of this therapeutic vaccine complements other conventional therapies such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

We need to clarify that therapeutic vaccines do not prevent nor cure cancer. However, they help to control the disease and offer a much better quality life to patients, especially those with advanced stages of tumors.

CIMAVAX EGF strengthens the immunological response of the body to the disease. It has been given to more than 3 thousands patients all over the country.
