The increase of actions to demand the cessation of the US blockade against Cuba and the return of the territory occupied in Guantanamo are among the tasks of Brazilian solidarity associations. These and other measures are part of the Declaration of Recife, approved last night at the end of the 22nd National Convention of Solidarity with the Caribbean Island, held in an auditorium of the Science Faculty of Pernambuco Administration.
We hold the most emblematic event of all those met in Brazil, as it was attended by 480 delegates from 18 states as well as representatives of 54 solidarity organizations, besides political parties guests, social groups, asserted Edival Nunes Caja, member of the organizing committee of the meeting.
This was the best convention with the largest number of participants and the presence in the final hours of the meeting of one of the Five, Gerardo Hernandez, emphasized the Convention.
Cajá stressed the new scenario that occurred in this event, which was held together with Hernandez, the release of the Cuban Five imprisoned in US jails, and was considered a victory for the people of the Caribbean island and
international solidarity.
The return to their country of Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez, Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino and Rene Gonzalez proved the irreplaceable value of solidarity in defense of just causes and confirmed the usefulness of the efforts of friendship groups with Cuba, reveals the Declaration.
Among other measures to intensify are the struggle against the US economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba and the closure and return of the military base that the United States occupies in Guantánamo.
The next solidarity convention will be in two years time in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, but delegates and friendship activists left convinced of accomplishing their purposes in defense of sovereignty and self-determination of peoples.
