UN Official Praises Cuban Women Empowerment

International Coordinator of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Rafael Cuesta, praised today in this capital the strong presence of Cuban women in decision-making posts.
If we compare that situation to that in Latin America or the Middle East, we can see there is more recognition to women here, something that represents a good sign, the official told the news agency Prensa Latina.
Thus, in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) adopted by the all governments, goal number five refers to the need to empower all women, an action for which they started the campaign UniTE, he said.
In that regard, he added that the United Nations system and all governments have the responsibility to defend the priority of saying No to violence against women and girls.
According to Cuesta, violence is a product of a patriarchal society. Thus, we must shake that patriarchalism for women to be more empowered, he explained.
In order to reach that goal, spaces should be created in every country to allow exchanging information, said the UNFPA official.
