Speaking at the opening of the 63rd session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva on Monday, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk denounced that more than 1,300 Palestinians have died in Gaza as a result of daily Israeli attacks since the purported ceasefire was announced almost one year ago.

During this period, Türk noted, restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid have continued unabated, as have Israeli proposals to forcibly expel the entire population of the Gaza Strip and the use of rhetoric aimed at dehumanizing Palestinians by senior Israeli political officials.

The High Commissioner also condemned executions and torture carried out against several Palestinians accused of collaborating with Israel at the hands of armed groups linked to Hamas.

In the West Bank, Türk warned that Israeli annexation is advancing unimpeded despite the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice, which has declared the Israeli occupation "illegal" and ordered its termination.

In that regard, he called on states to prevent the consolidation of the occupation in territories intended for a future Palestinian state, in accordance with the internationally accepted two-state solution.

Separately, Türk urged companies to abandon business practices that contribute to the maintenance of illegal Israeli settlements, which continue to expand and are driving a multiplication of forced evictions of Palestinians from their homes in the West Bank.

Regarding Lebanon, Türk demanded that Israeli armed forces cease attacks on civilians and civilian property.

He indicated that a team from his office is investigating violations committed by both Israel and Hezbollah since March 2 of this year in order to establish accountability.
