Trump Questions Lula's Historic Victory in Brazil

Without providing evidence of irregularities, U.S. President Donald Trump questioned the historic victory of his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who won the runoff against far-right Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, invoking his usual fraud argument and comparing the result to Joe Biden's 2020 win.

Without providing evidence of irregularities, U.S. President Donald Trump today questioned the historic victory of his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who won the runoff against far-right Senator Flávio Bolsonaro.

Trump resorted to his well-worn argument—electoral fraud—and compared Lula's triumph to the victory of Democrat Joe Biden in the November 2020 U.S. elections, whose results he still does not recognize.

"They just applied the Joe Biden manual in Brazil," Trump said, noting that "Bolsonaro had a big lead in the first round and was the clear favorite to win the second."

He lashed out at "the communists (who) don't let go of power once they get it."

Lula won this second round with 51.74 percent of the votes, compared to 48.26 percent for Bolsonaro, according to results circulating in press reports.

The former labor leader, after three presidential terms (2003–2011 and the current period that began in 2023), has just secured a fourth term in the Planalto Palace.
