Maylin del Toro Pursues Third Consecutive Central American and Caribbean Games Medal

Santiago de Cuba native Maylin del Toro (63 kg) stands as the most seasoned competitor on Cuba's national judo squad. Among those seeking qualification for the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo, she alone represented the country three years ago in San Salvador, where she claimed a silver medal.
In 2025, del Toro's standout results included a third-place finish at the Grand Slam in Tbilisi, Georgia, and an identical bronze-medal performance at the Pan American Championship held in Santiago, Chile.
Her most outstanding year came in 2019. That season, she captured gold at the Grand Prix in Antalya, Turkey, added a silver in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, and earned bronze in Budapest, Hungary, and Düsseldorf, Germany. She also claimed top honors at the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru.
Now 31 years old, the tenacious competitor has yet to claim a Central American and Caribbean Games title. She earned bronze in Barranquilla in 2018 and silver in the Salvadoran capital in 2023.
Once again, del Toro will face a formidable field in her weight class, including Mexico's Prisca Awiti, the reigning champion, Colombia's Cindy Mera, and Venezuela's Anriquelis Barrios — all ranked among the top 50 in the world.
"We are at a disadvantage compared to other countries because we have not participated in any of the qualifying events, which means we must perform at our very best in the three remaining ones. I am aware of the level in my division — we are athletes who have beaten and lost to each other — so on that day I will step on the mat with every intention of fighting for that medal."
