New York to Host Documentary Premiere on Lizt Alfonso Dance Cuba

Exhibirán en Nueva York documental sobre Lizt Alfonso Dance Cuba
The documentary My Cuban Dream, directed by Spanish filmmaker Christian Dehugo and chronicling the work of Lizt Alfonso Dance Cuba (LADC), will serve as the closing feature of the Havana Film Festival New York on May 7, the artistic ensemble announced today.
According to a statement from the company, director, teacher, and choreographer Lizt Alfonso is currently in the U.S. metropolis to present the film. The work originally premiered in October 2025 at the Valladolid International Film Week (Seminci) in Spain, which served as the launch point for an extensive tour of festivals across numerous countries.
Alongside Dehugo, Alfonso will participate in panel discussions regarding the audiovisual project, which offers a perspective on the dimensions reached by her professional dream and how it has transformed the lives of generations of Cubans, with educational, academic, social, and artistic repercussions.
Since its founding in 2000, the Havana Film Festival New York has promoted the construction of cultural bridges between Cuba and the United States. LADC noted that while this will be Alfonso's first time participating in this specific cinematic event, it is not her first visit to New York. The company, founded by her in Havana 35 years ago, became the first Cuban dance troupe to perform a full season at the New Victory Theater in 2003. On that occasion, they presented the show Fuerza y Compás, and in 2015, they returned to the same historic Broadway venue to showcase another success: ¡Cuba vibra!
When describing Alfonso to the Spanish press during Seminci, Dehugo remarked: “She is tenacity, resilience, dedication, passion...”
The filmmaker confessed that what most attracted him to Alfonso's story was her commitment to fusion dance and the courage to pursue it at the young age of 24. In the early 1990s, the blending of ballet and flamenco was viewed by some as somewhat aberrant, and it is precisely this quality that distinguishes her from other schools on the island. Dehugo commented that it is complicated to do something original without profaning both flamenco and ballet.
