Cuban Triple Jumper Povea Takes Silver at Iberdrola Cup

Cuban triple jumper Liadagmis Povea claimed the silver medal today at Spain's National Short Track Championship or Iberdrola Cup, an event dominated by Venezuelan Yulimar Rojas.
In her return to indoor tournaments, Yulimar, the greatest triple jumper of all time, needed just one jump to achieve 14.95 meters—a record-setting mark—that guaranteed her success in the competition, along with securing her qualification for the upcoming World Indoor Championships in March, to be held in Poland.
Taking place at the Palau Velòdrom Lluís Puig in Valencia, the disciple of Cuban coach Iván Pedroso, who competes for FC Barcelona, also registered 14.43 meters and committed two fouls, executing only four of the six possible jumps.
Povea, representing the host Valencian team, finished in second place with 13.96 meters, achieved on her third jump.
Third place went to Ana Estrella (12.98/Unicaja Jaén).
This marked the 45th edition of the Spanish tournament, and Diputación Valencia C.A. dominated with 96 points out of a possible 104, as their affiliated athletes claimed nine of the 13 titles in the specialties contested.
The men's version of the championship is named the Joma Cup and also featured Cuban presence in the triple jump. Cristian Nápoles, competing for Atletismo Albacete, achieved 16.03 meters—a modest mark but sufficient to secure victory ahead of Eneko Carracal (15.85/Real Sociedad) and Sergio Rodríguez (15.55/Facsa-Playas de Castellón).
Regarding competitions in Cuba, control tests for the national team began at the Panamerican Stadium in eastern Havana, measuring preparation primarily focused on the Santo Domingo 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games.
During what was the second week of activity, the Aurelio Janet Memorial was convened, exclusively for throwing events, and several results stood out, including Ronald Mencía's personal best of 77.86 meters in the hammer throw.
His new record places him less than 20 centimeters from the national record of 78.02 meters, held by Roberto Janet since May 2015.
World bronze medalist discus thrower Silinda Morales won with 63.83 meters, ahead of Neylin Rodríguez (58.45) and Liaris Sotolongo (58.44), both achieving career-best performances to complete the podium.
