Ecuadorean President Suspends Activities After Death Threat
Rafael Correa was set to have lunch with the community of Tabacundo, on the outskirts of Quito.
Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa suspended an official activity Tuesday due to a death threat against him.
The president was set to have lunch with the community of Tabacundo, on the outskirts of the capital Quito, when two incoming text messages threatening the lives of President Correa and the local mayor set off alarms among presidential security staff.
According to Correa, who gave a press conference to confirm the “serious threat,” experts traced the telephone message, which was sent from less than 500 meters away from the location where the event was due to take place.
“There was the risk that other people were involved in the plot, so we decided to suspend every activity, including activities set for the afternoon,” explained President Correa.
Efforts The presidential security tracked down the owner of the phone from which the text message was sent. He claims his phone was stolen and that he is not related in any way to the threat against the president. Authorities continue investigating the threat.
