Cuban Baseball: Pinar del Rio Loses, Falls in the Standings
Pinar del Rio lost yesterday its game against Artemisa, while Ciego de Avila and Isla de la Juventud won, leaving the defending champion momentarily out of the group of four teams to qualify to the Cuban Serie Nacional postseason
The team from the Cuban westernmost province, visibly affected by the loss of several key players, was crashed by the Artemisa Hunters 4-12, led by reinforcement Livan Monteagudo who went 3 of 5, with two homers and 5 RBIs.
The Hunters´ starter José Luis Padrón allowed 4 hits and three earned runs in five innings to secure the victory, while on the opposite team the star hurler Yosvani Torres was easily batted, allowing 4 runs out of 8 hits in just 2 innings and 2 thirds, and took the loss.
Meanwhile, Ciego de Avila handed a KO to the still leader Matanzas 16-4, with pitcher Yadir Rabí on the mound, and solid offensive led by third baseman Raul Gonzalez, 4 in 5, and 3 RBIs and Jose A Garcia, with a homer and two singles in six at-bats.
Also, Isla de la Juventud won its game 7-6 against Industriales, with a walk off single in the ninth by catcher Luis Abel Castro; batting in Dainier Gálvez, and reliever Danny Aguilera remained undefeated, with his eighth win in the tournament.
