The Uruguayan Luis Suarez and Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo ended 2014 as the top scorers in league matches, as noted today the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS). Both were credited 31 goals each in a calendar year with English club Liverpool and the Spanish Barcelona, in the case of Suarez, while Ronaldo scored all his points with the Spanish Real Madrid.

This is the second time that Suarez is leading this classification, as he did in 2010 when playing with the Dutch Ajax Amsterdam.

While it was the first time for Cristiano Ronaldo, who was second on four occasions.

IFFHS ranking contemplates league games in the calendar year and includes 60 major leagues.

In 2014, 15 players from the world's 60 top leagues scored 20 or more goals in their national championship.

Ronaldo and Suarez are followed by Icelandic Alfred Finnbogason (Heerenveen and Real Sociedad) with 29 goals, Brazilian-Spanish Diego Costa (Atletico Madrid and Chelsea), with 28, and Argentinian Lionel Messi (Barcelona), with 27 points.

Paraguayan Jose Saturano Cardozo, who scored 58 goals in Mexico's Primera Division in 2003, keeps the record for 12 months

The scoring is as follows:

1. Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid): 31 goals

2. Luis Suarez (Liverpool and Barcelona): 31

3. Alfred Finnbogason (Heerenveen and Real Sociedad): 29

4. Diego Costa (Atletico Madrid and Chelsea): 28

5. Lionel Messi (Barcelona): 27

6. Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Paris Saint Germain): 26

7. Graziano Pelle (Feyenoord and Southampton): 23.
