With a sincere joy I welcomed the announcement of the Ministry of Public Health of Cuba. Such ministry showed its will to welcome back migrating physicians who, for any reason, decided to return their homeland.
Then, it quickly came to my mind the great amount of Cuban sport players who have defected from this land with the purpose of shining in other geographies. Suddenly, I asked myself: “Would some of them want to return to their homeland?”
Some have visited again their neighborhood thanks to the easing of law relaxation and travel permits. However, they have not been notified officially that they can return and live here in Cuba, with the opportunity of opening any business, like any other citizen.
I should clarify that I am not referring to those currently playing all over the world. By the way, they could also be called to the national baseball team if they perform well in their leagues.
The athletes currently signed without the participation of INDER are legally linked with their respective clubs. So, it will only be a timely return for specific tournaments. I repeat, I am not against it, but this is not the goal of these lines.
Not to mention the Big Leagues, where Cuban players have been forced to abandon their residency in Cuba. Therefore, it is almost impossible for them to invoke repatriation, unless they get free of their contracts.
That’s why I would like to focus on those retired players who feel awkward in a foreign country. Their experience, like that of physicians, could be perfectly useful if they decide to work as trainers in a sport facilities.
Worst-case scenario, if they do not want to be linked to sports, we must not deny them the right to be in their homelands.
