
With tributes to cultural institutions in Cuba and paradigms of the literary universe, the XV Nicolás Guillén International Colloquium and Festival will take place from May 13 to 15 in the Cuban capital, it was announced today.
Academic meetings, concerts, poetry readings, and exhibitions make up the program of the event, shared this Monday with the press from the Havana headquarters of the Nicolás Guillén Foundation, the institution convening the gathering.
Inauguration Highlights and Program Structure
The inauguration will feature a lecture by the prominent Spanish poet and director of the Cervantes Institute, Luis García, in the Aula Magna of the University of Havana, and a performance by the National Choir of Cuba, under the direction of Maestra Digna Guerra.
Among the activities of this first day is a highlight exhibition of posters designed by students and professors of the Higher Institute of Design, curated by Eviel Ramos, one of its teachers, in the gallery of the Faculty of Economics.
Central Tributes of the Edition
The gathering will pay tribute to the centenary of the birth of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro, the 95th anniversary of the publication of Nicolás Guillén's Sóngoro Cosongo, the 90th anniversary of the assassination of Federico García Lorca and the beginning of the Spanish Civil War, as well as the 65th anniversary of the founding of the Union of Cuban Writers and Artists (UNEAC).
According to statements by the Academic Director of the Foundation, Leonardo Sarría, the titles Buenos días Fidel, Sóngoro Cosongo con Motivos de son, and España, published by Ediciones Sensemayá, will be presented. The closing ceremony reserves a special moment with a performance by the National Folkloric Ensemble of Cuba at the Avellaneda Hall of the National Theater.
Venues and Additional Events
The first day the event will unfold in various spaces at the University of Havana, then move to the Villena Hall of UNEAC, where panels and conferences will take place centered on the work of Cuba's National Poet, the thought of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, among other themes.
In addition, the meeting will pay tribute to Cuban son, whose practice was declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and will invite attendees on Tuesday the 12th at the Caracol Hall of UNEAC to the screening of the documentary Lorca en La Habana, among other initiatives.
Engaging New Generations and Announcing Contests
As commented by the President of the Foundation, Nicolás Hernández Guillén, the gathering aims to bring the work of the renowned Cuban poet closer to new generations, who could enrich it with their critical vision.
He also launched the call for participation in two poster contests: one aimed at students and another at designers and poster artists from the country, the latter organized by artist Pepe Menéndez, National Design Award winner in 2021.
Hernández Guillén used the occasion to announce the celebration of a colloquium dedicated to the Cuban poet, essayist, and literary critic Ángel Augier on Friday, July 10, in honor of the 35th anniversary of the Foundation.
