The president of the Colombia Humana party, Gloria Flórez, highlighted today the support of parliamentarians from around the world for a public declaration in defense of Venezuela's sovereignty, International Law, and regional peace.
According to the congresswoman, 634 legislators adhered to the pronouncement in just over 24 hours. The statement condemns the bombardments perpetrated against Bolivarian territory and the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.
The text characterized the attack carried out against Venezuelan territory as a violation of international mechanisms that, being mandatory for all States without exception, do not admit any justification within the rules established by the United Nations Security Council.
The document further demands that the United States government immediately cease all armed action against Venezuela, fully respect its sovereignty, release the kidnapped individuals, and act strictly within the framework of International Law and the founding principles of the United Nations.
It also formalized the signatories' endorsement of the position of the Governments of Colombia, Chile, Brazil, Mexico, and Cuba, which emphatically rejected the aggression against the sovereignty of Venezuela and Latin America.
“We warn that this aggression not only puts Venezuela at risk, but directly threatens the peace and stability of all Latin America and the Caribbean, a region declared a Zone of Peace in 2014 and which rejects the use of force as a mechanism of political imposition,” the declaration added.
The pronouncement insisted that internal conflicts must be resolved exclusively by the peoples themselves, through dialogue, democratic participation, and sovereignty, an essential principle of the United Nations system and a pillar of the international order.
Latin American countries, it underscored, are united by deep historical, cultural, and political ties, forged in the ideals of freedom, independence, and dignity of our peoples.
They further urged that the legacy of the liberators who conceived the spirit of Gran Colombia and Latin American integration prevail over the logic of war, colonialism, and imposition by force.
“We urgently call on the world's governments, multilateral organizations, and the peoples of Latin America, the Caribbean, and the World to speak out firmly to activate international diplomatic and legal mechanisms and to defend International Law as the only way to preserve peace,” states the text.
